Taliansky moreplavec Amerigo Vespucci si ako prvý uvedomil, že Kolumbus objavil nový kontinent, vďaka čomu bola Amerika pomenovaná podľa jeho mena. Španieli začali vytvárať na nových územiach svoje kolónie, k čomu sa v krátkom čase pridali i Portugalsko a Anglicko.
